Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy – A Medically Prepared Person in Each Family

DrBonesAmyWithout equivocation, I think the inimitable personas of Joe Alton, M.D., aka Dr. Bones, an M.D., Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of OB/GYN, and his wife, Amy Alton, A.R.N.P., aka Nurse Amy, an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, are the preparedness industry’s unchallenged best-known and most-respected representative duo!

Nurse Amy is a certified nurse midwife as well, and an expert on herbal remedies and essential oils. She also has one of the largest medicinal gardens in the state of Florida.

Husband and wife, Dr. and Mrs. Alton are firm believers that to remain healthy in hard times, everyone should have the knowledge to use all the tools at their disposal. “Why not use ALL the tools in the woodshed?” asks Dr. Alton.

Their mutual goal is to promote integrated medicine. This will provide their readers with the most options to keep their loved ones healthy in any disaster situation.

Their mission:  To enable a medically-prepared person in every family for disaster situations.

Together, they’re the authors of the #1 Amazon bestseller, The Survival Medicine Handbook, and is at the top of the categories of Survival Skills and Safety/First Aid. As a team, they are well-known speakers, podcasters, and YouTube contributors, as well as providing medical and medical-related articles to leading preparedness, survival and homesteading magazines. They have more than 575 posts on medical preparedness on their website at doomandbloom.net. Nurse Amy  has also written articles on survival gardening and natural remedies for Survivalist and Backwoods Home Magazine.

Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy use pseudonyms to allow them the freedom to go outside the conventional medical wisdom when it comes to disasters, and they are quick to mention that their efforts are to teach people the methods for medical treatment that are for times of disaster––when there is no expectation a doctor will be available to give care.

Dr. Bones has contributed to Survivalist Magazine, Backwoods HomeSelf-Reliance Illustrated, and Survival Quarterly, and has written a chapter on Basics of Medical Survival for Doctor Prepper’s latest edition of “Making the Best of Basics––Family Preparedness Handbook.”  Dr. Alton is a member of Mensa and collects 19th-century medical books to gain insight into off-grid medical strategies.

The Survival Medicine Handbook is a guide for those who want to be medically prepared for any disaster where help is NOT on the way. The expanded and revised 2nd edition of the 3-category Amazon bestseller (Survival Skills, Disaster Relief, Safety/First Aid) is geared to enable the non-medical professional to deal with all the likely issues they will encounter in catastrophic scenarios.

In circumstances where medical personnel are overwhelmed and access to modern technology is limited or non-existent, The Survival Medicine Handbook is the essential reference book for every library. Written in plain English, it has step-by-step instructions on how to identify and treat over 100 different medical issues.

James Talmage Stevens Host ImageJames Talmage Stevens, Host and Author

James Talmage Stevens (aka Doctor Prepper™) began his career in the preparedness industry from the days of his youth. His family lived with his Grandparents immediately following the end of WWII. He learned the basics on the Pace farm in rural Guilford County (NC). Farm chores and gardening were standard fare––plowing the back 40 behind a stubborn mule was substandard! In 1974, upon finishing graduate school with 4 young children and no prospects for a job due to economic conditions during a national economic slump, James reverted to his past experiences on the farm and chronicled in his notebook, along with some hand-me-down recipes from his mother and grandmother. Noting there were no viable books that dealt with all the basics, i.e.: a broad range of food products, he began to utilize his analytical skills, organizing handwritten notes, recipes, and food lore into one volume of information. He spent his spare time while job-hunting, and Making the Best of Basics was created. Before going to press, the subtitle Family Preparedness Handbook was added to distinguish Basics… from the emergency preparedness genre of the existing Civil Defense and governmental agency information.

The Prudent See Danger & Take Refuge, Clay & Maria Whitson

Doctor Prepper interviews Clayton Whitson and his wife Maria, authors of Preparedness Foundations—Nine Lessons to A Basics Lifestyle of Disaster Preparedness.

On their website at AlphaCities.org, they provide disaster preparedness training for churches to create a network of believers during a natural or man-caused crisis.

They began about 3 years ago on their family preparedness efforts, and realized their community and their church were not engaged in preparing in an organized manner. Recognizing there were more than 700 churches/congregations in their town of Tulsa OK, they recognized the strength of their numbers if they could be trained to give help when the need arose.

EmP – Nuclear Spring, Author TD Barnes

This interview with Thornton D. (TD) Barnes is about “EmP – Nuclear Spring,” the sequel to Mr. Barnes’ popular fiction book, “EmP–Nuclear Winter.”

EmP – Nuclear Spring commences after four years have passed since the fateful EMP attack and the nuclear bombs that followed, destroying 90% of the earth’s population. For the first time since their subterranean lifestyle began, the survivors are able to come out of the Yucca Mountain underground complex initially constructed to store nuclear waste. They find themselves under surveillance by Islamic activists of the Islamic Brotherhood who survived in Central America. The Brotherhood is moving into Nevada to take control of the Hoover Dam, which gives the Brotherhood control of the Colorado River and the electricity it generates for the western United States.

Both the Brotherhood and the survivors in the mountain realize the jet stream is returning the fallout of the nuclear winter back to the region. Both must secure food and supplies to carry them through the return of the fallout. The survivors in the mountain repel attacks on the mountain by the Brotherhood and enter the next phase of nuclear winter prepared to battle the Islamic Brotherhood and drive them from the region.

TD Barnes, author and entrepreneur, was raised on ranch at Dalhart, TX, graduated from Mountain View High School, Oklahoma, enlisted in the Army and served in Army Intelligence in Korea. He attended and graduated numerous electronics schools in Army air defense missiles and radar at Fort Bliss TX. He served in Germany, attended OCS at Fort Sill OK. He became a field engineer at the NASA High Range facility in Nevada for the X-15, XB-70, Lifting Bodies, and Lunar landing Vehicles. He was a participant in the NERVA project at Jackass Flats NV (Area51SpecialProjects.com), on CIA special projects at Area 51, worked on Project A-12 Blackbird Oxcart, and was on the exploitation team assigned to study a captured Russian MiG aircraft and radar systems, assisted in the genesis of the Navy’s Top Gun program, and the USAF Red Flag program, and on the team initiating development of stealth technology.

Brushfire Plague’s R.P. Ruggiero

R.P. Ruggiero, Author of The Brushfire Plague, a fiction book from Prepper Press!

R.P. lives in Colorado with his wife and two sons, spending much time as he can in the outdoors. He strives to live by the credo that “Specialization is for insects.”

When R.P. is not outdoors, writing, or learning a new prepping skill, he works coordinating people to achieve their common goals. He brings his 20 years of experience in group dynamics practice and management, particularly when people are under stress to good use in his novel The Brushfire Plague. The book is grounded in neighborhood defense during a devastating plague.

Visit BrushfirePlague.com

R.P. grew up loving to read apocalyptic fiction, so it was natural for his writing to examine how to be ready for “the end.”  In his adulthood, he works with groups that experience a high degree of stress and challenge to achieve their goals, thus focusing his consideration of group dynamics in the Brushfire Plague series. His writing also has strong consideration for community cooperation and personal involvement.  He gives importance to having a community become involved with the situation when a disaster happens. There is safety in numbers, and their importance is especially evident when society is pressed to the limit. Unfortunately, a crisis or disaster scenario can totally disintermediate group dynamics.

Reading good survival fiction is a great way to catch the vision of the author—and benefit from his imagination and insights as he discloses the details of scenarios that our normalcy bias prevents us from seeing.  I’ve never been a fiction reader—except for school assignments. I will admit to having a growing appreciation of the imagination and forethought good TEOTWAWKI writers have utilized to help us have the opportunity to look into the psyche of the uncertain future from a different point of view––a perspective that helps us check our preps to make sure we’ve covered the new-found possibility we’ve just discovered!

To introduce The Brushfire Plague, here’s a short synopsis of Volume I in the trilogy:

A virulent plague erupts across the globe, and Cooper Adams faces a daily battle for survival as society unravels at unbelievable speed. With his past military training, he organizes his neighbors for self-defense and strives to save them from marauders. However, he’s driven to save his wife, but to no avail. He accidently discovers the first clues about the origin of the plague that is killing hundreds––ultimately, thousands––of millions around the world. In his pursuit of information and discover, Cooper learn the truth. However, he must combat looters, organized gangs, and those protecting the Brushfire Plague’s secrets. His son is stricken by the plague, so his search to uncover the plague’s origin and a possible cure transforms into a race against the clock. When he finds the source of the Brushfire Plague in his hometown, Cooper faces a paralyzing choice between exposing what he has learned with potentially shattering consequences, or abetting a horrible secret and giving his nation a chance to recover and rebuild against a sea of enemies.

In The Brushfire Plague II

A:  A virulent plague breaks out.  It’s like nothing ever seen before; both in its rate of contagion and morbidity.  People do start dropping like flies.  The outbreak is worldwide.  Against this backdrop, Cooper Adams who is your average guy—a travelling salesman, actually—who must step up and organize his neighbors to defend themselves from the escalating violence and chaos.  He soon gets the first clues that maybe the Brushfire Plague—so named for how fast it moves—wasn’t just some fluke of nature.  So, he starts tracking those clues down—as the situation deteriorates all around him.  He and his neighbors are confronted with tough decisions and tense discussions along the way.  In the end, Cooper’s son Jake falls ill and his search transforms into a race against time.  What he learns about the Plague forces him to confront a horrible choice between hiding it and giving our country a chance to recover or telling the world the truth about he’s learned, with possible horrendous consequences.

Q:  What made you write this book?

A:  First of all, I’ve always been a fan of this genre.  Since I was a kid, I enjoyed apocalyptic fiction.  I would read anything I could get my hands on, from Alas, Babylon to Planet of the Apes to I am Legend.  I have simply always been fascinated with how civilization might end.  Second, in the last few years, as ‘survivalist’ or ‘prepper’ fiction has developed, I have read here as well, both for entertainment as well as learning some useful lessons about my own preparations.  Finally, I wrote this book because I wanted to focus on how society might be upended and also to focus on how a group of people would deal with it.

Q: Can you say more about that?

A:  Sure.  Almost every time I have read apocalyptic fiction that takes place after a society has collapsed, I want to know:  what were the first days and weeks like?  Brushfire Plague takes place entirely within the first few weeks of the outbreak.  So, that’s a very interesting period of time to think about, write about, and plan for!  Then, very few of these books focus on the group dynamics in this kind of situation.  It’s too common for the protagonist to be a tough guy and everyone else does what he wants or he kills them!  I think that’s very unrealistic.  I think it helps make a great story and can provide some useful things to think about; if you ever have to deal with this kind of situation.  I believe group dynamics will be key to survival.

Q:  What are your qualifications to write this book?

A:  First, I hope readers will agree I’m a decent writer!  With a work of fiction, I think the ability to tell a good story, with real and engaging characters is paramount.  I think your readers will be pleased with the quality of the writing.  Also, I’m an avid reader in this genre so I’m very familiar with it.  Second, my day job is one where I work with groups of people, often under extreme stress.  I bring that knowledge of people and group dynamics to good use in Brushfire Plague.  Finally, I know enough about firearms, basic tactics, and being prepared to build in real, credible lessons into the book.

Q:  Why should someone buy your book over the other offerings out there?

A:  I think my book brings a lot to this genre.  So far, it’s been received well by a wide spectrum of readers—from those unfamiliar with this genre to those who read everything in this genre to hard-core survivalists.  I believe the writing is strong, the characters are engaging, and the story is fast-paced and really pulls the reader in.  My favorite feedback so far has been, “Your book made me think I needed some more canned goods and learn how I might defend myself!” That shows impact on the reader.  I also think Brushfire Plague can be the perfect way to introduce a reluctant spouse, friend, or family member into this genre and bring them a greater awareness to the need to be better prepared.

Q:  What are you proudest of in Brushfire Plague?

A:  Boy, that’s a tough one.  I’m pretty happy with lots of different aspects of Brushfire.  But, I’d have to say that the emotional connection readers have passed on to me that they’ve made with various characters:  from Cooper Adams, the protagonist, to Paul Dranko, his survivalist friend, to Cooper’s son, Jake.  This has me proudest I guess.  If readers don’t connect to the story and its characters, nothing else really matters, you know?

Q:  Do you call yourself a ‘Prepper’ or a ‘Survivalist’?

A: You know, I hate labels.  I just consider myself to be doing what every responsible father and every American should be doing.  I’m prepared for a variety of situations that could arise where I might have to take care of my family when ‘normal’ life has been disrupted.  I think of what I do as being no different than buying fire insurance.  I’m not prepared for everything…I can’t afford it! But, I feel like I’m just being responsible.

Q:  What’s your favorite firearm?

A:  This won’t surprise anyone who has read Brushfire Plague already!  My rifle of choice is the FN FAL.  My favorite pistol is the M&P series by Smith and Wesson; in .357SIG.  To be honest, the M&P is the first pistol that I can actually fire accurately!

Q:  If you could do one thing differently with Brushfire Plague, what would that be?

A:  That’s easy, I would have had 100,000 copies pre-ordered!  Seriously, while I’m pretty happy with it, there were a few characters I wish I had spent a few more pages on.  But, I plan to rectify that in the sequel!

Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief

Jennifer Elswick, a professional preparedness and disaster worker and CERT teacher, discusses her passion for helping people become prepared––especially with food storage. Jennifer tells us how to help ourselves and others in need and also the why and how of using Thrive foods for long-term storage and every day as well!

Preparedness has been a driving force for Jennifer and her husband since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. She now helps others with networking and resourcing is every aspect of family preparedness. She realizes that supporting the prepping family keeps America alive and strong.

Jennifer and her husband and I have been personally working in Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief for more than 20 years––since Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida. They felt in their hearts that they should help the victims, marshalled their own and other volunteered support, and that was the true start to their disaster relief mission.

Emergency Preparedness has always been a way of life for them––they hadn’t a name for it until that point in time, but they discovered their inner prepper and have continued to be  preppers since that event. They recognize that people need to have a little more of everything stored to get their family through such occurrences, and that weather-ret or ; they can happen at any time.

Ken and Jen have formed an amazing network––a prep family––that has brought us to where we are today.  It has been wonderful journey that has blessed them for more than 20 years.

They teach people how to affordably purchase long-term food storage and emergency items can be purchased affordably.

How to acquire Non-GMO, MSG-free and healthy food––including an organic line of items.
Using Thrive foods on a daily basis and saving money.  Stop wasting time, money and throwing food away.
Establish networking and preparedness with proper groups of people and create a preparedness community.
