When you think about the hard times that may be coming, you can easily see that the only way to get through it is to be prepared. This may sound difficult, but it isn’t. There are people who put together a bug out bag for their entire family. Each member gets their own bag and inside of each one there are enough necessities to get you started. It doesn’t even have to be a devastating situation. It could be used for helping you survive a hurricane, tornado, and everything else. You simply have to know what to put inside of your it when you are preparing bug out bags.
Choose Your Bag Wisely
Your bag is the key to successful bug out bags. It should be a bag that is large enough to hold your supplies, but not so large that you cannot carry it. It should also be durable since you may have to grab it and go.
Water Is a Must
You should pack at least three liters of water in your bag. This will get you through about 72 hours. In the event that the problems last longer than that, you will also want to carry along a water filtering system, a metal water bottle, and perhaps purification tablets. One great option for water filtration systems is the “Lifestraw”.
You Need Food
Protein and energy bars are ideal for a bug out bag, but you may also want to consider MRE type dehydrated meals for more substance. Matches and tinder for a small fire, a manual can opener, a metal pot, sporks, and other things that you may need when cooking should also be included.
Clothing and Comfort Items
It is recommended that you pack extra clothing, a couple outfits, for each family member. A rain poncho, hats, and other items may also be included. You will want to have a sleeping bag and something that allows you to improvise a shelter for nights when you may be “camping” out away from home. Insect repellent can also be included for comfort. Glow sticks to help you see in the dark or signal for help, phone chargers, and extra batteries are all great take along items as well.
First Aid and Hygiene
A first aid kit is a definite must have in the event of an emergency. Your kit should include Band-Aids, gauze, tape, medications for pain relief or prescription medications, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, tooth brushes and paste, deodorant, and more can all be included.
Other Necessary Things to Consider
You should have cash on hand or within reach. It should be small cash in case ATMs are down. A map and a compass can be helpful if you are out in the woods. Multi tools can also benefit you when in a bug out bag. Many people also want to take along a weapon and ammo for their protection and if need be, for food. Keep in mind, our recommendations are not a complete list of possible things you will want to take along. You should use your best judgement when packing your bag.
